Why I Love Café Oranga

“Café Oranga is my favorite place to go for a tangy treat!”

I could go on and on about why I love this café but for now I’ll leave you with detailed description of what it feels like to go there from start to finish

When you walk into Oranga, you immediately see orange. Straight ahead you see the order counter with a wall of fresh oranges floor to ceiling behind it. The orange experts are helping customers by taking orders and making those orders from the fresh oranges. You see a display case beside the counter full of orange desserts and snacks. Above the counter are hanging lists of the menu and order items. You are intrigued by the orange brownie and you decide to order it. You see the person in front of you receive her orange sherbet. She goes to sit down in the comfy seating area. As she sits down you notice that there are various different areas to sit in the cafe. There are comfortable couches and chairs, clusters of big tables for family/group seating, as well as standard cafe seating at tall tables by the windows. You are next in line so you order your orange brownie and an orange smoothie. The worker’s name is Penelope Persimmon and she gives you your receipt and a number. You see the other workers beginning to blend your smoothie and package your brownie. You sit down at a table by the window and wait for your order. You look around at all of the orange decor, noticing that it makes you feel happy and excited for the rest of your day. Your number is called and you retrieve your order. After you finish eating you throw away your trash except the smoothie cup because it looks really cool and you can reuse it at home. You walk out the door feeling much happier than when you arrived.

We all dream in color. Every design concept and sketch comes with some sort of color association. But what do those colors mean? What associations are we making just with that choice alone?

Orange could be called the most controversial color. People either love it or hate it.

Orange can have either positive or negative associations. The hue, whether it is saturated more with red or yellow, can feel earthly or aggressive or more happy and warm. Commonly, orange is linked to heat and energy because it is the color of fire and a citrus fruit.

In the most pure forms, orange stirs up a bit of color controversy. The color associations people have with orange are usually quite strong, in part because of the nature of the color. Orange is a high-visibility color and is often used to catch people’s attention in print and web publication; therefore it can make a great accent color.

Orange represents fire and the sun and is thought to help stimulate the brain and appetite. The color is also representative of nature and the autumn, because it is part of the range of colors on display when trees begin to lose their leaves.

On the other hand, paler hues can be calming and have wide-ranging appeal to both men and women. Brighter oranges are more accepted by younger people rather than older generations.

Positive meanings of orange include warmth, energy, youthfulness, health and adventure. The most common negative associations of the color include crassness, rudeness and frivolity.

This mandarin orange salad is fresh, sweet and loaded with flavor. It is topped with an amazing homemade orange salad dressing that you can’t live without!

The Story

Around this time of year, I crave ALL the salads and this mandarin salad is absolutely one of my top recipes. The fresh ingredients mixed with the sweet orange vinaigrette is such a great combination. We love to top it with grilled chicken to make it a full meal.

This mandarin salad always makes an appearance on Thanksgiving! It comes from my Aunt’s ‘Favorites’ cookbook and everyone loves it! In her original recipe, she also adds in green onions, mushrooms, avocado and tomatoes, however my family prefers it with just mandarins, cranberries and nuts.

The Recipe

Servings: 6
Total Time: 10 minutes

Salad Ingredients

  • 10 ounce bag spring mix (or spinach)
  • 11 ounce can mandarin oranges
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/3 cup sliced almonds (can use walnuts or pecans as well)

Dressing Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup frozen orange juice concentrate
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange rind
  • 1/4 cup olive oil (or vegetable oil)
  • 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon vinegar (I used apple cider)
  • 1/2 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon poppyseeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the spinach, oranges, cranberries and almonds to a large bowl.
  2. Add the orange juice, orange rind, olive oil, sugar, vinegar, lemon juice and salt to a mason jar. Shake until well combined. Add the poppyseeds and shake just before serving.
  3. Pour dressing over the salad just before serving. Toss until combined.
  4. Enjoy your tangy salad!
